How to Test Your Microphone Online
Before jumping into a Zoom call, Discord chat, or streaming session, it is good to verify your audio. This tool provides a secure way to check your input volume, background noise floor, and clarity.
- Grant Permission: Click "Start Mic" and allow the browser to access your audio device.
- Check Levels: Speak naturally. The green bar should hover between 50% and 80%. If it hits red, your gain is too high.
- Record & Listen: Click "Record," speak a sentence, and play it back. This confirms that your mic is actually sending data, not just static.
Troubleshooting Audio Issues
Windows 10/11 Fixes
Go to Settings > System > Sound. Ensure the correct "Input Device" is selected. Also, check "Privacy Settings" to ensure your browser has access.
Mac / macOS Fixes
Open System Preferences > Sound > Input. Check that the input volume slider is not set to zero. Restart Chrome if permissions were just granted.
Understanding Audio Specs
- Sample Rate: Most web mics operate at 44.1kHz or 48kHz. This is the number of "snapshots" of audio your mic takes per second.
- FFT (Fast Fourier Transform): The graph shown above visualizes frequencies. If you see spikes on the left side while silent, you have "Low Frequency Rumble" (often from fans or AC units/background noise).
- Privacy Note: All processing on AVTester happens client-side. We do not store your recordings. The audio data is processed by your CPU and discarded the moment you close the tab.
